( mostly because nate is a telepath and therefore, can find julian with minimal effort. but he's sitting on the couch in the small room, controller hovering a little in front of him as the fighter on screen battles another character controlled by the game itself because. it's not like anyone else had been here earlier. )
( Seeing how heās on the other side of Etraya, it takes him a little to make his way to the Institute. Not because itās very far, but because he takes his time in flying his way there once heās out of his telekinetic bubble. One day heāll learn how to more or less teleport himself, but. Today is not that day and so flying it is, which he still enjoys doing.
Finding Julian isnāt all that difficult and when he arrives there at the common room, he lingers in the doorway for a moment, shoulder pressed against the doorframe, eyes catching the floating controller there before they direct their gaze to the screen. He knows what television is despite his having minimal encounters with the shows that can appear on it, but. Games, on the other hand, he hasnāt seen or experienced much. He could easily download it all telepathically as a means to get a better understanding and he has done such a thing when time was limited for learning, but. He also just wants to⦠not. To see and experience it for himself. Although, as of late, heās questioning that a lot.
After a moment, he makes his way over stands there behind the couch. )
( julian hasn't been keeping track of where everyone's been staying - mostly because that's quire's job, and julian knows it wouldn't take him long at all to track down people if the need arose. he's no telepath or expert tracker, but he can feel the space around him telekinetically. wouldn't know how to describe it any, but chances are high if shit came up and he needed to quickly grab everyone without quire's help - this place isn't all that big, julian can sift through it fast enough. just like he feels nate's approach, even if the guy stays back by the door for a bit.
and when he comes up to stand behind the couch, julian tips his head back against the cushions to look back towards him while still pressing buttons on the controller to keep fighting off the secondary character on screen. not particularly well given he's not paying attention to what he's doing, but it's not as if it requires all that much thought to take out the game ai. )
Are all games fighting ones? No. Most've the ones I've got here are - or there's Mario Kart. Which isn't fighting, but has gotten people into more fights in here than any other game we've got.
( Blue eyes drop their gaze down to Julianās face there and he stares to the telekinetic for a moment before he looks back to the screen of the television, curious and trying to understand the appeal of it. After a moment, he climbs his way over the back of the couch to come and sit down next to the other mutant. )
Mario Kart gets people into fights?
( He sounds both a little confused and curious about that, legs swinging over to dangle off the couch until be pulls a knee up and drapes an arm across it, chin dropping down to rest atop his arm as he stares to the television. )
( nate swings around by. climbing over the couch, which. okay. he can do that if he wants. and julian turns his eyes back to the television in front of him - not to continue playing, but to close out of the game entirely. the game cartridge gets pulled out of the console and set to the side, before another one takes it's place in the console so julian can load up the promised mario kart. )
Last time Santo and I had time to play, he got so pissed Cess was beating him that he threw his controller and broke the table.
( Blue eyes blink in surprise at the thought of someone breaking a table over losing to a video game but he also cant help the chuckle that leaves him either because⦠what. )
That mean I need to keep an eye on you with this one?
( Lifting his head up from his arm, he brushes fingers through his hair, pushing it back. Is Julian the competitive type with this Mario Kart, too? )
( he is stupidly competitive, over everything, but that goes without saying, and julian doesn't feel the need to get into it. instead, he plugs a second controller into the gaming console, and comes out of his slouch to lean forward and grab hold of it, offering it over. )
( Controller in hand, he keeps his one arm draped there across his knee as he watches the startup of the game. Itās unlike anything heās really seen before and while some might want to skip ahead or be busy munching on their snacks, he watches everything load up as it does - takes a look at the various characters that pop up here and there. )
Itās really⦠colourful.
( He chuckles a bit, still staring to the screen. )
If you're playing the boring way, yeah. Most people race and also try to knock everyone else off track to slow them down. You can also throw crap at each other.
( on the character select screen, julian clicks confirm with peach loaded in, and - gestures towards the screen. ) You're going to want either Yoshi or Toad, they're easiest. All lightweights so you can't get hit that much or it'll damage your car, but they're faster.
( Heās chewing on his bottom lip in thought while he stares to the screen - really taking it all in as Julian explains Mario Kart and racing in the game to him. When it comes to making his character car choice, he picks the Yoshi character after taking a second to realize he needs to press the button. He chuckles some as he does, enthused by something as silly as picking a character. He hasnāt really had much of a chance to indulge in things like this. Not like others around him have had. )
Use the A button to accelerate, ( he talks through the controls, but also shows nate with the controller julian picks up from where it had just been - hovering around. as he goes through the buttons and their controls, he hovers his fingers over them, showing nate how they work.) Break is B. Use the stick for steering, R for jumping, Z for using any items you pick up.
I'll start it on an easy track so you can get used to the controls first. ( with a grin, julian adds - ) You're not a sore loser, are you?
( Lifting his gaze up from the controls, he huffs a little and then grins right back at him. )
I mean, if I really wanted to, I could just download it all from your head.
( Even the skill which Julian might[??] have with this game, but. He wants to try and learn for himself. Or at least, for the moment anyways. It's not as though this is some life or death scenario he's faced with. It's just a game. Right? )
You could try and get it all from my head, but I'd feel it.
( not that julian thinks that's enough to deter him, but there's always - )
And then I'd have to kick your ass. Which would be fun for me, but a lot less fun for you.
( which. he says, but there's no threatening tone behind the words. yeah, he'd probably have to kick nate's ass just based off of principle, but he's not getting all aggro over nate playfully bringing up scooping info out of his head. )
( He can feel the playfulness despite the way it's delivered and it's why he shakes his head with a soft puff of a laugh under his breath. Sure, buddy. Whatever you say. )
How about we just play the game and let the racers do the talking, yeah?
( you know. because of those sounds. but julian's grinning again and leaning back in his seat, hands off the controller. he selects the moo moo farm, because it's. well. one of the easier tracks, and gets them through to the beginning of the race.
( Julian sits back but Nate remains as he is with his one knee pulled up and arm draped across it, controller dangling there at an angle while blue eyes remain fixed on the screen. He's not sure what to expect with all this and sure, he could take that peek in Julian's head to get an idea, but. There's something a little more... fun? exciting? about doing it this way. Either way, he's completely focused on everything happening on the screen even as they wait for the race to start, eyeing the cows and everything that comes with the track. He even chuckles a little to himself, albeit softly. Clearly the reaction of someone who isn't used to these sorts of things.
When the countdown finally goes and the race starts, he drops his gaze down to the controller for a moment and presses the buttons he'd been told about to start his car up, watching with his mouth slowly opening as Yoshi begins to drive and he... laughs. Never mind he's sort of going all over the place. This is just... surreal to him. )
( yeah, he sucks at this. but that's fine, sometimes playing isn't about being good at something, but just enjoying it along the way. which nate seems to be doing just fine with, considering his response to his driver starting up.
julian's steering princess peach around, but he's not really going as fast or as hard as he could be. not when his focus is mainly on nate. )
See? It's just - mindless fun. Competition without the death or dismemberment if you fuck up and lose.
( The weight of so much on their shoulders. Especially when it comes to the well-being of themselves and others.
He drives Yoshi around a little - goes off the track and almost hits a cow - before he finds his way back to the track and approaches a row of cubes with a question mark on them; he doesnāt even care what place heās in currently, driving towards the cubes. )
Those're the items you can toss at people. Don't hit the bananas, they'll throw you off. Or the moles. Or other cars, if you can help it.
( nate doesn't care what place he's in, but princess peach is maintaining first place as she drifts around corners and hits the floating squares. he doesn't bother using the turtle shell yet. mostly because he's already in first, and there's no one to toss it at. yet.
julian's carried a shitton on his shoulders for the last half a decade or so. carried the weight of every loss while trying to keep his head held high. it's not easy, it never has been. but that's part of being a mutant, isn't it? carrying more than they should have to hold, and getting stronger because of it. )
